Infiniti drivers should be able to enjoy their vehicle, not worry about how smooth their car is going to drive today or if the car is even going to start. Keep reading to learn more about the crankshaft sensor today, including what it is, why your car needs one, and symptoms of its failure to be on the lookout for.
The crankshaft angle sensor measures the RPM’s or rotation speed. Without a crankshaft position sensor, your engine would not start. The engine management systems use the information provided by the crankshaft sensor to control the ignition system timing, fuel injection, and other engine functions.
If this part of your car fails or malfunctions, you will have issues with your car starting. At first, the problems will be intermittent. For example, your Infiniti may stall out randomly. Usually, when this happens, you will not have any issue restarting the car, at least in the beginning.
Later, you might have issues starting the car in wet or cold weather. This will not be every time, so you will never know when it will become an issue. When you are driving, you might also notice that your RPM gauge behaves erratically with no apparent cause.
Eventually, the crankshaft sensor will stop working. When this happens, you will try to start your car, but it will not run.
We have already mentioned many symptoms of a failing crankshaft system in the above section, but here are a few more that you may notice. Take a look at these to see if they match with any symptoms your Infinity may be experiencing:
If you think there is a problem, you should take your vehicle in for a crankshaft sensor test. Your mechanic will use a diagnostic scan tool to check your car’s onboard computer. Codes between P0335 and P0338 indicate an issue with the crankshaft sensor.
Another test that your garage may do is reading the engine RPM. The scanning tool should find an RPM between 100 and 500. If your RPM is not in that range, the result is indicating that your sensor is bad.
